17 November 1872 — Madrid
Sunday. 17th November [1872]. The children came for their class until church time– A good many people at church but Mr Whyte was hoarse & gave us no sermon– I painted till nearly luncheon time– Mr Haggart called & Miss Sickles came to offer to take us to the theatre wh we declined. Henry took me out walking & left me at Mme Dragonetti’s & we had a talk abt the Serranos & what the Dss had said to me– Henry went to see Chotek & then came back & fetched me & we walked by the Calle Mayor to the Puerta del Sol & home by the Arenal. At tea time Bouillé called—then Clarita & then Baronessa de Andilla– I had rather a headache & fell into a doze out of wh I was woken by Mr Goschen who came to bid us good bye as he leaves this evening for Eng: (via Gibr). I gave him a small packet for Maria. Mr Ffrench, Mr Seymour, Mr Haggart & the Riaños dined. I asked Mr Whyte but he is gone this eveng to Linares. I had such a headache that I was obliged to go to bed almost directly after dinner.
