10 December 1872 — Madrid
Tuesday. 10th [December 1872]. Breakfasted in bed & got up latish. At 3 we went to the Palace to have an Audience to congratulate the King on his recovery—the Barrals & Koudriaffsky were also there. Mme Barral splendidly attired in pearl grey turned up with red, a square cut gown (very low) & bonnet to match. I wore a light brown dress Henry bought me at Genoa & a bonnet to match wh Hill made this morng trimmed with some of my fine Alencon. The Queen looked extremely well in black velvet with a blue crêpe fichu. The King looked wretchedly pale & thin. We stayed abt ¼ hour & then went to see the Dragonettis & as it was raining hard came home– We dined at the French Embassy & had a vile dinner cold & bad & little of it. Sickles accompanied me in & I sat between him & Sr Murillo (Under Secy of State). Excepting him we were all dips– After dinner there was a reception but we went away at 10½.
