12 December 1872 — Madrid
Thursday. 12th [December 1872]. On getting up this morng we were told there had been fighting in the night & we could see an unusual stir over at the Senate, the Guard National assembled & the Guard Civil doubled—in fact as Giovanni said “it was like Carnival.” It appears that the Republicans had made an attempt to revolt last evening but had been put down by the troops & national guards—but the number of 15 had been killed & many wounded. It is supposed to be a thing got up by the Cuban slaveholders against the intended reforms in Puerto Rico as money was found on all those of the party who were taken or killed. I painted in the morning between moments running to look out of the window—& copied for Henry. Esquivel gave me a lesson. After lunch we took a ride & went to the Casa de Campo—on arriving there Henry’s horse “Whitie” fell lame so Henry got on “Baron” & we went on leaving the coachman to wait for us. We got home latish & I was quite blue with cold– Had visit from Polos de Bernabé. In the eveng I wrote invitations.
