20 December 1872 — Madrid
Friday. 20th [December 1872]. Worse news of Mr Whyte. Wrote in the morning. After lunch I walked with Henry. We went to the Cortès hoping to see the new Ministers presented by Zorilla. We stayed till after 4 & as they did not come we went home & found they were still at the Senate where they go first to present themselves. The Riaños & Mr Gayangos dined with us & Ffrench. While we were sitting talking in the evening came the news that poor Mr Whyte was dead which made us all very sad. Clarita came in for ½ hour to bid good bye to Ffrench but she did not feel well & we all separated early.
