21 December 1872 — Madrid
Saturday. 21st [December 1872]. I wrote a good many letters & at 12 went to see Clarita with Hill & Mr Hunt said she was not so well—found her not so ill. Ran back to lunch & at 2½ Henry & I started to walked to the Calle Mayor to meet Emilia & walk with her. We went to buy things for the Christmas tree I am going to make & went into several prendarias & to the Plaza Mayor & to the Plaza de Sta Cruz where are sold the Nacimiento or Nativities—& then we walked home tired & glad of some tea– Mr Gayangos had left us in for some commission & he came later & fetched Emilia home. Ffrench came later to take leave of us & went from here to the station & really went off today going as far as Bayonne. He is very much cut up at leaving–
