8 February 1873 — Madrid
Saturday. 8th [February 1873]. Mr Norman turned up again from Jerez & stayed lunch. Esq. came for my lesson. Grau brought my copy of Titian. I went out in the afternoon to see Mme Ettling & then to see Mme Valera whom I found in & she tells me there is great excitement about the Hidalgo affair as the Govr seemed determined to accept the resignation of the artillery officers & Topete has been to the King & it is thought there will be a coup d ètat & change of Govt. I rushed off home at once to find Henry & luckily met him on the Recolletos– I got out & walked. It was bitterly cold. We then went to the Dragonettis & in the Alcala met the King driving alone wh reassured us. Mme Dragonetti said the King was very much annoyed abt the Hidalgo affair & that Topete had been to the King but that there was no talk of changing the Ministry so we went home reassured. In the evening we went to the Bauers box to see Lucretia Borgia & saw Alvareda who took a very gloomy view of things. The opera was good but every body was depressed.
