9 February 1873 — Madrid
Sunday. 9th [February 1873]. I worked all the morning at tidying & arranging papers. We woke to find the ground covered with snow & it snowed all day till 5 when Henry went out for ½ hour. I wrote letters &c all day. Mr P. Norman, Mr Rutledge, Mr Gayangos & the Dragonettis dined with us besides Messrs Seymour & Haggart. Mme Dragonetti told me after dinner in confidence that the King intended to abdicate being furious at being betrayed by Zorilla. It appears he promised the King at 6 o’cl yesterday arrange the Hidalgo affair & then went straight to the Cortès & gave acct that he had accepted the Resignations and got a vote of confidence from the Congress. They all went away early & I told Henry what she had told me. It made him very anxious.
