10 February 1873 — Madrid
Monday. 10th February [1873]. This mornings papers announce the King’s intention of abdicating wh put every body in a state of excitement. I wrote in the morning & Henry rushed off to the Palace to see Dragonetti & he confirmed the news & said the King was very angry with the Govt & decided to go. While I was writing the 2 Serrano boys came & said their sisters would follow to put themselves under our direction. I at once made arrangements in case they sleep here. At ½ past 3 Henry told me he would take me for a walk & I got ready but Mr Mendes Leal called & detained him & just as we were going off the Dss de la Torre came & brought the childrens things for the night. She looked very pale & unhappy & said she had telegraph for Serrano from Jaen & expected him this evening. We agreed that the children should remain with us tonight & she took us in her carriage & put us near the Cortes. There we met the Conde de Rascon who said no message had yet come from the King. There was a crowd in the St Geronimo so we went up the Calle del Prado & the Atocha to Jesusa’s to look at the cabinets for Lord Granville & then went round by the Plaza & Calle Mayor to the Palace to see Mme Dragonetti—found with her Mme Jena & so could not say much, but I managed to whisper to her that I hoped she would come to us if necessary & the Queen too—the latter has not yet left her bed! On getting home I wrote her a note to impress it upon her. We dined at 6 & the Serrano children & their governess with us– At 9 I dressed in case anyone came to our ball. The F. Ambr & Mme Bouillé came also their attachés, the Aylton girls & abt ½ doz pollos & they left early & we got to bed soon after 12– The musicians, supper all were had in vain– It appears the King has taken 24 hours to consider but is likely to insist.
