11 February 1873 — Madrid
Tuesday. 11th [February 1873]. I was so excited that I hardly slept all night. I went up to see the children who are all right. Just as we were going to begin breakfast the Duke de la Torre & his ADC Sr Viarzol came. The Duke arrived last night—he took away the 2 boys & left the 3 girls & Madame with us. I arranged then the room next to my boudoir for them & wrote in my boudoir quietly. Directly after lunch I & Hill set off to Mme Dragonettis. I found her sitting in the midst of packing & confusion of garments & boxes. Mme de Barral was there helping. Then then called in Hill & we set to work & got on very well. Mme & M. Bauer also called there & helped too. I remained till ½ past 5 till the best part was done & then set off with Hill home & met Henry in the Plaza Oriente so I went home with him & sent Hill back that she might bring me later news of when the King was likely to start. I copied a letter for Henry & looked after the little girls when Sr Gato appeared with the 2 boys as the Duke expects disturbances tonight. We dined at 8. I sent Giovanni again to Mme Dragonetti to see if they really go tonight. She sent me an inkstand & a note to say they dont go till tomorrow. All kinds of reports of people armed in the streets. At 9 Mr Haggart rushed in from the Cortès to say the Republic had been voted by nearly 300 against 30 & all was quiet & the people dispersed– Henry went to the Fch Embassy but I did not. When he came to bed he told me that he had been to Bauers & had learnt that the King & Queen were to start at 5 tomorrow morng by special train.
