12 February 1873 — Madrid
Wednesday. 12th [February 1873]. On getting up we were told that the Dss had come to the house at 7 o’cl & taken the children back with her & left the governess to speak to me. I sent for her & she told me the Dss had told her to say they were much obliged &c. I had a headache & breakfasted in bed. We heard at 10 that the Reyes had started at 6 this morning as arranged. Later we heard that Bauer had returned from Aranjuez being as far as he had been able to escort them. We were fearfully anxious to know how they got on—& were glad to hear again when they got to Alcazar. I had a bad sick headache but had a lot of copying to do for Henry. Clarita came to see me—also Fitch—Rutledge & Grau who were crying & very miserable calling the Ministers “brigands” & saying he was ashamed of his country. In the middle of copying I was so sick I had to lie down on the sofa of my room from wh I did not move all the rest of the day but I managed to finish the copying which Hy wanted to send by Mr White who was going to England. Mme Ettling came to see me– No further news we went to bed very anxious to know whether the train had got to Portugal safely.
