13 February 1873 — Madrid
Thursday. 13th February [1873]. I got up late but was better. Had a deal of writing to do for Henry. Abt 12 we heard from Bauer that he had heard by telegram that the Royal Party had reached the frontier at 1 in the night so our minds were easier. Henry & I went out driving directly after lunch. The streets looked very dull tho’ there were “colzadenas” out of the windows & flags in every direction yet there were no private carriages, or well dressed people in the streets & armed men at all the public buildings. We went 1st to the French Embassy & found them in. We went on to Bauers’ & saw them,—they both looked very worried but said they were happy now the King had got away safe. She was looking very pretty in a light blue cashmere dressing gown trimmed with grey feathers. We went on to the German Legation & I went to see Mme Canitz while Henry went to her husband. Found Bernadine Aylton with her—both sympathetic about the K & Q & both furious against Genl Sickles for the active part he took in getting them to go. He went to congratulate the Govt as soon as they had passed the vote of confidence wh was the means of making the King to decide on going. He also illuminates his house & hoists the american banner– We went to inquire how the Dss de la Torre was after all the excitement & then to see the Riaños whom we found very indignant & low abt things– Everyone agrees in thinking Genl Cordova & Ct Martos traitors of the vilest & blackest here. We saw several people walking abt with red phrygian caps on– On getting home Henry got a telegram from Sir C. Murray announcing the safe arrival of the King & party at Lisbon & we sent at once to let the Bauers know– I hear that the Queen was carried from her bed by 4 servants on a mattress & that at the door the King took her in his arms & lifted her into the carriage. But that she was so exhausted when she got to the station that the Drs said “give her some food” but it was found that the Conde de Ruis had forgotten it all! & a porters wife at the station gave them some bread & broth!
