14 February 1873 — Madrid
Friday. 14th [February 1873]. Got up late & was not at all well but had a deal to write for Henry. Did not go out. Clarita came in the morning & I gave her the money for Mirecki’s concert. I wrote to Maria & Mme Dragonetti. Mme Vernouillet called & brought Isabelle Madrazo—later the Duchess de la Torre who seems still very anxious, & says she fears that they may try & imprison her husband or get rid of him. She blamed immensely Cordova & Martos & said Zorilla had been duped– She said Cerrano did not know what to do he would not declare for Prince Alfonso & could not sit up for himself. Mme & the 2 Aylton girls came later & just before dinner came Sickles & stayed prosing some time praising up the Republicans. After dinner I recd a telegram from Mme Dragonetti saying they had arrived safely “Heureux succès tout bien mille souvenirs.” I went to bed early. The Opera was opened again tonight.
