16 February 1873 — Madrid
Sunday. 16th [February 1873]. A messenger (Capt Vivian) arrived with bags from England having started on Wednesday. I read Dante all the morning & wrote letters. A visit from Los Marqueses de Alazares & her sister. Henry & I took a walk down the Alcala & Recolletos. It was a lovely hot day & people were all out in crowds just as if since last Sunday they had changed a King for a republic. We went round by the Hortaleza & Calle Aneta home. The Rianos, Gayangos, Rances, Weil & Capt Vivian dined with us but all left early.
