20 March 1873 — Madrid | |
Thursday. 20th [March 1873]. It was a dull overcast showery day. In the afternoon it cleared a little & I & Henry went to walk. We went to the Bernars & found her at home—no news. We set off to walk home but it rained & we were obliged to get into a Simon. Mme Prim called on us. The 1st time I have seen her out of her house since her husbands death. She was very plainly dressed in the deepest mourning. She seems very despondent abt the state of Spain & said that she tells the Genls they ought to try & do something & when they answer that they are biding their time she tells them that they may let it go too far. Later Mme & Mlle Polo called. After dinner I read aloud & Beck also came for a short time to arrange abt giving me harmonium lessons & then we went off to Mme de Canitz’ & took Louise Aylton with us. Henry played whist & I sat & chattered with the Romanas, Marqueses Casa Torres &c &c & as Henry’s rubber was a long one we did not come home till after 12– | |
