22 March 1873 — Madrid | |
Saturday. 22nd [March 1873]. Beck gave me a lesson at 11. At 3½ we went out riding but it was not a pleasant day. At times when the sun shone it was hot—& then it turned cold. We passed the Cortès where we found a lot of ill looking men collected. The Riaños dined with us. Afterwards came Beck, Mirecki & Clarita & we rehearsed for Monday. There was a good deal of alarm in the evening & the eveng papers brought news that the Cortès was declared in permanent session till the law for the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico should be passed. | |
