2 April 1873 — Madrid
Wednesday. 2nd [April 1873]. Being short of hands Henry was obliged to give me some despatches to copy. After lunch I had a visit from Mme la Rochefoucauld & her daughter Ida Cavendish & at 3½ I went out in the open carriage & fetched Emilia. I went to have my tooth finished up at Gardeners & then she & I went to walk the retired part of the Retiro wh used to be the Reservado wh was very pleasant lots of pansies & tulips being out. Found Mme Ettling waiting for me on my return. We did not go out & in the evening I read aloud Ticknor.
