10 April 1873 — Madrid
Thursday. 10th [April 1873]. Giovanni traced my bottle to a private pawn shop in the Carrera Carretas it had been pawned for the sum of 300 on 5th Jany 1872 under the name of D. Manuel Acuna & gave his address as Hortaleza 86 2ndo but Giovanni said he found that house had only 1 floor & no such name was known there. Being Holy Thursday there were no carriages out after 10 so Henry & I took a walk. We met Mrs Sickles outside our door dressed a la Manola with a high comb walking to church. We went up the Carrera San Geronimo where there was a great crowd of men watching the women as they went by to church—as they have to go to visit 7– We wanted to go to the Canitz in the evening, but there was not a single carriage heard in the town so we did not dare to go out.
