7 May 1873 — Madrid
Wednesday. 7th [May 1873]. I wrote all the morning to Grannie & Mrs Burr on the loss of her brother & got some of the new books to read. We had found a box full awaiting us on our return on Monday. Clarita came to pay me a visit & we had a long chat. At 5 Mme de Canitz came & we had tea & went out together. We took a stroll in the Retiro wh is lovely, now all the trees being in full bloom & the green leaves fresh & bright. We took one turn in the Fuente & she went home & sent me home. News that the Koudriaffsky English housekeeper who has been ill 13 days as worse & died in the night. After dinner we went to the Rochefoucaulds where were a good many people—the amusement of the eveng was a farce. It appears that last night at Bouillés Mme de Vernouillet was handing about a very fine fan, she had, to be looked at when the Baronesa de Andilla exclaimed “that fan is mine, it was stolen from me 2 years ago”– Mme Ver: said “there are many like it in the world” & putting it into her pocket went off– Mme Andilla repeated this to every one & even spoke of it to Vernouillet himself but he never offered to let her have it back wh we thought not very nice of him, considering it had been given to an ancestor of Mme Andilla by Queen Maria Luisa & was an heirloom.
