8 May 1873 — Madrid
Thursday. 8th [May 1873]. The messenger arrived from Lisbon & I had a good many letters. I & Henry went out driving we fetched Emilia & took her out with us & went to the Swiss’ garden in the Calle de Palma to buy some plants bought a Wisteria & honeysuckle plants but I came home early as I had rather a headache. Just as I was going to dress for dinner Henry called me to see the Zodiacal light wh was to be seen in the west. It is like a red flame darting up from the horizon in to the sky & it seems to flicker or get brighter & fainter. While looking at it came Mr & Mrs Hamilton as she brought me some patterns of baby clothes Mme de Canitz wanted. After dinner we went to the Canitz where Henry played whist—but is was rather hot there.
