10 May 1873 — Madrid | |
Saturday. 10th May [1873]. I finished the translation & copied it to go by the messenger who starts for Lisbon this eveng. Henry went to see Grau at the gallery & at 4½ I went to the Ettlings. There were so many people dining there that I cd not speak much to her. She says her husband is a little better. The Bernars came there. He said he had been to the prison & seen Topete that he had found abt 50 carriages & 200 people it was quite a demonstration. I said I wd leave cards on his wife wh I did & then went home. We dined at the Mendes Leals & met the Sickles, Rochefoucaulds, Gravenegg, Carnide, Maffei—Hortega & Ittersum. After dinner Miss Sickles made confidences to me about her love affairs wh was very amusing. It was quite hot. | |
