12 May 1873 — Madrid | |
Monday. 12th May [1873]. A very hot day. We went at 4½ in a close carriage to Vista Allegre at Caravanchel taking with us Emilia Riaño & Mme Saavedra & stayed in the grounds the whole eveng. We went to the Vaqueria & had cream which is slightly sour & eat it with sugar & bread. Henry was delighted with it & said that he had not tasted it since he was in the East– It appears that the cream of different days is mixed wh turns it slightly sour. It was nearly 7 when we got into the carriage which we then had opened to return to Madrid & we had huge bunches of flowers stuffed all round us & the footman held a casuchona plant wh Mme Saavedra gave me. We took her home near the Fuente—left Emilia at home & only got home ourselves in time for dinner at 8. I dressed after dinner & we had several people come in the eveng & they got up a little whist. | |
