14 May 1873 — Madrid
Wednesday. 14th [May 1873]. Grau came at breakfast time & brought our copy of Las Hilanderas. I wrote letters & copied one for Henry—also worked at the tapestry mending. I had a toothache nearly all day. Read aloud to Henry. At 5 Miss Bentley came & I went to dress for riding but just then a dust storm came up & we were obliged to give up going on as it looked as tho we were going to have a thunderstorm—but it went off. Baron Andilla’s son Sr Marcilla came to see us to give him some letters for England as he is going there. At 9 we went to the Circo de Madrid to join the Sickles—they did not go there little after 10. We saw the end of a Zarquela & a ballet called “Fiamma” in wh the celebrated Italian dancer Pincheara danced very well & was followed & covered by a red light wh kept up the illusion of her being a child of flame.
