Friday. 16th [May 1873]. I had the toothache in the night & got up late this morng. I did not go out at all but read & worked. The Canitz, Riaños, Mr Hamilton & Mr Stanley (the discovery of Livingston) dined with us– Stanley made himself odious. He is Correspondent of the New York Herald but a Welshman born. He began by abusing St Paul’s & Westminster Abbey & disgusted us all. After dinner came Count Maffei, Mr Napier, Messrs Jabot, Figueras & Fuenrubia & they played whist till after 12– | |
