26 May 1873 — Madrid
Monday. 26th [May 1873]. It was very hot all day– Had a visit from Mme Palmaroli & her boy also from Mr Molony. At 6 we went out riding & met Vernouillet who gave us the names of the new French ministry & told us McMahon had been named president of the Republic, it appears that the Govt here are in a fright lest the same reaction should take place here– No news from the North of the Carlists—or of Nouvilas. The Govt has sent Salmeron (Min. of Grace & Justice) to look for him– There are reports that Nouvilas is acting treacherously. A good many people came to us & I gave out that it was our last reception it being now too hot to continue receiving.
