12 June 1873 — Madrid | |
Thursday. 12th [June 1873]. Mr Macdonell the new first secretary arrived from England– Busy morng writing & copying. After lunch Henry & I took a walk together, called on the Bernars & then on Emilia Riaño. It is the Corpus today but processions are forbidden—all shops shut & a bullfight—a general feast & politics seem quite forgotten. We went to the Canitz in the evening & took the Aylton girls—it was very cold & a very windy night—we had several heavy showers today. | |
