26 July 1873 — London | |
Saturday. 26th [July 1873]. The La Croix’s came to lunch with us– Blanche went down to Canford by 2 train & the M & S by a later one. Mrs Rate sent me her carriage to drive in & Isabelle de Peyronnet accompanied me. I went to see Lady Ely who is still laid up in bed & has been ill some time. We went to tea at Lady Alwyne Compton’s, saw Ld Northampton & his drawings & met Lady deNescy & her daughters there. We dined at Apoley House at 7½. Sat between the flea (Fleming) & Sir A. Mallet, L. Walden, Quin, Lady Mallet, Disraeli, Lord Walden & Mr Colibert (their agent in Spain) dined also. The Flea was rather fun over his french with Colibert– After dinner the Duke of Wellington talked a long time to me. We talked abt keeping of Sunday. He said he had dined on a Sunday to meet HRH. & not only that but had bet £10 on a rubber the P. had played & lost. He said that in paying the P. the next day he wrote to him & said he had showed his devotion to HRH in 2 ways first in betting—then in doing it on Sunday. HRH wrote him a letter saying he would be sorry to do anything to offend the English people but that he had not played whist till after midnight. | |
