31 July 1873 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Thursday. 31st [July 1873]. To day was the grand fête in the Park. We made ourselves very smart for lunch & then went out to see the labourers dine. There were speeches but they were not audible the tents being so gigantic. This over there was school tea 3500 children– Tea was made in vats & garden watering machines– Cake & buns came by the cart load but the confusion was awful there was every kind of amusement in the Park & every one seemed to enjoy themselves. The day was lovely– We dined early & before dinner was quite over were called away to see the fireworks wh we did from the terrace. Rd Du Cane had come down this afternoon & so had Mr Bircham but he leaves tomorrow. After the fireworks there was supper & we were all weary & glad to go off to bed.
