8 August 1873 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Friday. 8th [August 1873]. We went out with Buckland in the Park “snaking” as he calls it. It was very hot so we soon turned back not having caught any snakes. Had a better acct of Maria. Went fishing in the lake very bad sport– Buckland brought in a snakes’ nest full of eggs. Sitting out after dinner Buckland told some very amusing stories but I had a headache & slipt off early to bed.
