9 August 1873 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Saturday. 9th [August 1873]. Most of the company left Aldermaston & others arrived viz Mrs Nassau Senior, Mrs Kay, Lord Somers, Leo Layard, Henry other 2 nephews. In the afternoon Mrs Burr drove me & Henry & Georgy Gordon & Mr Ferguson to Shaw House to call on the Eyres. We only found Miss E. in & while going round the garden with her she asked me if I knew Miss Spencer Churchill as she was staying at the Rectory close by. It appears that Mr Nelson has had this living abt a year so he gave up Scottowe & Car is here with them. We sent one of the Nelson boys who was practising cricket to fetch Car & she soon came over. Mrs Burr was so kind as to ask her to go back to Aldermaston so Car hurriedly put up a gown & we took her back with us in the carriage & were just in time for dinner. Mrs Senior sang in the eveng. Car & I gossiped till late.
