13 August 1873 — Langham House, Portland Place
Wednesday. 13th August [1873]. Puss Welby breakfasted with us. Directly after the Mother & I went to Martin the diamond merchant 2 doors off deposited my diamonds & then went to Waterloo station & went down to Exeter House to see Maria. Cox left me & returned to Maria– We found Maria on the sofa looking very white & ill. I lunched with the children & soon after we had to leave; the M & I returned to town in Maria’s carriage found Mr Clark with Henry at L. Hse. At 5 we started for Orton– Got there abt 7—there was only Mr George Marsh staying there. I had not seen him since I was a child– He has been in Paris in a maison de sauté for the last 20 years.
