15 August 1873 — Orton Hall, nr. Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Friday. 15th [August 1873]. We all left Orton. Mr Marsh went to London, Aunt Mary, Gracie, Henry & I to Edinboro. We had a very pleasant journey. Starting at 11 we reached Edinboro at 6.30. Walked to the hotel “The Edinboro” close to the station & kept by a Mr Middlemas. I sat sometime at my window admiring the town. The high gabled houses perched on the top of the green slope are most picturesque. We had an excellent dinner. Afterwards we sat at the open window & listened to a piper who played the pipes very decently. Gracie called to him from the window for different tunes & we threw him 6d wrapped in paper to reward him with.
