19 September 1873 — Langham House, Portland Place
Friday. 19th [September 1873]. At 12 Grannie drove off back to Blackheath. Mrs Burr came to lunch & also Alice, Ola & Louise Du Cane. We took leave of Mrs Burr who goes back to Aldermaston tomorrow. Henry & I finished all our shopping this afternoon together going out in Arthur’s brougham. At 7 we went & dined at Mrs Grotes & her niece Miss Lewin & there were also Lady Eastlake & Charles Newton—we had a very nice little dinner. Mrs Grote seemed much better than where we last dined with her & joined more in the conversation. She gave us a very good bottle of Madeira & some curious old Medinaceli wine. She was as kind & friendly to me as ever– We went on to Lady William Russell’s where we found a great many people Sir F. & Lady Elliott, Lady Westminster & Lady Theodora, Tom Hughes & Lady Elys & Mlle de               . At first Lady Wm seemed pretty well but she had later a faint attack & said “It must come some day.” I cannot last for ever. Je suis très mal. We thought it best to leave her & so went home–
