21 September 1873 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Sunday. 21st September [1873]. Went to church with Margie in the brougham & was joined there by Mr Rate & Francie. We walked back– In the afternoon Alice took Henry & me for a drive, we went to Walton to call on Mr Evelyn & congratulate him on his coming marriage. He was away in London so we left a message & went on our drive. We came to a road where the carriage could scarcely turn so we got out & Henry & I walked down a little hill to a lovely spot where there was a little lake, a little hamlet in a narrow valley—the houses were covered with virginian creeper which was turning red & apples & pears laded the trees. We got back to Alice & the carriage & drove home. Dined at 8 & Alice went to bed directly after & I sat with her.
