29 September 1873 — Blois
Monday. 29th September [1873]. We breakfasted & went out to see the town—& went to the Castle which is magnificent. We walked round it & then went in & visited Francis I wing. The staircase which is outside the building is of most beautiful work covered with cyphers & designs. This wing is beautifully restored, the ceiling repainted on the old traces & the walls done in imitation of stamped leather tho’ I must confess I never saw stamped leather like it. We were shown the place when Catherine de Medici died where the Dukes of Guise were murdered &c. We also went over the other wing of Louis XII wh has not much remaining. We looked at some bad pictures kept in a museum & bought a bit of Blois pottery a kind of rough faience with bright colouring– We dined & at abt 2 took the train & went to Poitiers, got there before dark—& went to the Hotel d’Europe a very good hotel & large & we took a walk round the town before dark. It was very hot. We found a curious church with Byzantine tower & looked in all the shops to see if we cd find any jewelry of the country– All we found were silver clasps for a cloak wh are made in the Vendée. I bought one– We dined & went early to bed.
