4 October 1873 — Bayonne
Saturday. 4th [October 1873]. No “Lively” & we began to get very tired of waiting. I went out with Hill & bought muslin & we made caps to amuse ourselves– I was sitting at work abt 11—there was a drizzling rain when Mr Haggart rushed in & announced the arrival of the Lively. I at once went down to the quay– She is a lovely ship more like a yacht than a vessel of war. The commander Capt. Wilkinson told us he had not received orders to fetch us till last night when he at once set off from Bilbao– The Carlists had shot at them as they left the harbour– We could not start he said before tomorrow at 12.30– Henry & I took a walk in town. Henry went with Capt. to call on civil & Military Govt. Latter returned his visit . At dinner saw at another table 3 men talking English who turned out to be an old Times correspondent O’Meara & the Minister for Guatemala in England & his secy– Sr Gutierrez came to visit us in eveng & also O’Meara.
