5 October 1873 — Bayonne
Sunday. 5th [October 1873]. Fine day. At 12 went down to Lively & embarked. The quai was lined with people– Most had been on board & seen all over her & were most astounded at her being so clean– We set off at 12.30 & had rather a near squeak at the Bar—the tide & wind being very strong & we nearly touched the pier & might have carried it away. We slightly damaged the flies of one paddle wheel. The day was lovely & quite calm so that I was able to go down to lunch—but towards 5 we began to find a little roll & I began to be sick & could not eat my dinner. Luckily at 8½ we got to Santander so we did the passage in 7 hours. We were not allowed to land– The Consul Mr Marsh came off & said we must keep quarantine– Mr MacDonell came on board & so finding we could not land we resigned ourselves to sleeping on board. The Dr gave Henry his cabin, the SubLieutenant Mr Combes gave Mr Haggart his & Hill & I had beds on the state cabin floor. We got up at 5 thinking we should land & go by 7.30 train to Madrid on
