6 October 1873 — Aboard Lively, Santander | |
Monday. 6th [October 1873]. but were not allowed to land no answer having been recd from Madrid. We passed away the time as well as we could reading & talking & knitting & playing whist & backgammon. Sat talking till late on deck in lovely moonlight with the officers Keefe the 1st lieutenant—the Dr & another officer called Vaux & Combes. Just as I was turning in to sleep—the Govr of the town arrived with the consul to say they had got a telegram from Madrid with orders to let us land so we determined to leave tomorrow morning by 7.30 train for Madrid– MacDonell left for England. | |
