7 November 1873 — Madrid
Friday. 7th [November 1873]. The Messenger arrived from Lisbon. The train he came by was robbed by 7 men at a small station beyond Cuidad Real– One robber stood over the engine driver—while the others plundered. Mr Robbins was awakened by two armed men seizing him & holding him down whilst they took his watch, money and valuables– They did the same to all—dragging the rings off ladies’ hands & taking their earrings out of their ears—& then allowed the train to proceed. I worked all day at the tapestry mending to get it finished. Col Fitch came to garden in the patio.
