21 November 1873 — Madrid
Friday. 21st [November 1873]. Mrs Whyte came & spent a long time telling me all her troubles about D. Joaquin Olañeta who was engaged to her daughter having gone crazy. She stayed with me quite an hour. I copied for Henry. It was a lovely day & as he had to go to see Castelar at 2 we lunched early & I went out with him in the carriage. From the Presidencia we went to the Canitz & I went up to see her. She arrived this very morning & came by way of Pamplona. Then we went to the Comyn’s & did not find them in. We wanted to congratulate him on his appointment to the Legation of London. We then walked up from Rosales Exhibition to the Mint for exercise & then home. My headached so that I was obliged to lie up. Mr Doria who went yesterday to Toledo & returned this morning came to tea & stayed till dressing time. The Bauers, Serranos & Derings dined with us—a nice little cozy dinner—but all went away early of wh I was not sorry as I was feeling so unwell.
