23 November 1873 — Madrid
Sunday. 23rd November [1873]. I went to the service in the Calle Tejanitos with Hill—saw the Hamilton children who said their brother was a little better. In the afternoon Henry & I took a walk & found the sun very hot & streets smelt very unpleasant. We called on the Bauers but they were out so we went to the Calle Ancha & by some side streets got round to the new market wh is being built by an English Co. & so to the Sickles where we paid a visit: found them all looking very pale & tired from their hasty packing. Did not see Sickles & went home. Mme & Bernadine Aylton called also Mirecki & Mme Canitz. The Riaños, Derings, Pal: Haggart, Maffei, Doria, Robbins dined with us.
