15 December 1873 — Madrid
Monday. 15th [December 1873]. Mr Saurin arrived & brought me a packet of letters from Ivory, the M & Adeline. The post also brought me more. After lunch we went out riding to the new Plaza de Toros wh is half built, in the moorish style of yellowish brick & is very handsome. It is some way outside the town & stands well on the dreary plain. The ornaments are in brick & very effective. We rode over the fields round to the Fuente & home. It was very cold before we got in. Mme Ulloa called & also the marqueses de Monistrol. Backgammon. After dinner read aloud & then the whist party arrived. When Mme de Canitz & Louise Aylton came we had a game of 21. Some of the officers came. They leave Madrid tomorrow.
