20 December 1873 — Madrid
Saturday. 20th [December 1873]. Messenger (Capt. Leeds) arrived from London via Santander but there were no letters for me. I had a headache all day & could hardly do anything. Had lesson of Inzenga but had to lie on sofa all afternoon & could not go out with Emilia so sent the carriage for her & she then came & spent a few hours with me. Was better & able to go in to dinner at 7. At ¼ to 8 went off to Serranos to see the children rehearse their “comedie” in French & in wh Conchita plays the harp. Came home abt 9 & to bed–
