21 December 1873 — Madrid
Sunday. 21st [December 1873]. Still bright & very cold. People are beginning to get anxious fearing a famine next year as the crops cannot be sown & in the South there is no water. Wrote letters & copied for Henry to send by the Messenger who starts this eveng for England. Mme Aleañia little girl Missy came to see me & I have invited her to tea at the end of the week. At 3 Henry & I took a walk down by the Campo de Moro & round by the station road home. As we came in we met the people coming out of the Senate from the function in honor of Breton de los Aureros. It was not so very cold out—the mountains were very clear as they look in summer—& have hardly a bit of snow on them. Maffei came & brought letters to go by Messenger. I had a lot of letters by this day’s post. Genl Concha, Pedrorena, Sedorovitch, Adee, Gama dined with us. Played harmonium in eveng.
