24 December 1873 — Madrid
Wednesday. 24th [December 1873]. Wrote in morng & copied for Henry. Went after lunch to see Clarita. On seeing me she burst out crying & said her baby was dying. I consoled her & went to see the child who looked very ill. Mrs Hunt’s sister had him in her arms. I went to pick up Henry in the Fuente & we left some cards & then came home. I sent to Mr Hamilton for advice abt the baby. Maffei called before dinner. At 9½ we went to Mme Canitz’ where there was a Christmas Tree—there were only the Ayltons, Koudriaffskys (he looking dreadful), Marquesa Casa Torres, & a few men. The Ayltons had taken a little neighbour girl with them & as they went to the midnight mass we took her home for them. It was difficult to sleep on acct of the noise in the streets. It seems to be the rage this year for men & women to amuse themselves by beating petroleum cans in lieu of drums wh makes a horrible noise.
