25 December 1873 — Madrid
Thursday. [25th December] 1873. Christmas Day. The Hamilton girls came before church & I gave them their muffs– Mr Rutledge called but we had to send him off as Henry & I were going to church. There was the christening of the Moores baby after service. When I got home there was a message from Clarita saying the baby was worse & wd I send for a Dr so Hill & I went off to her house & I stayed there & Hill came home & sent for Brehm. At 2½ I came back & met Henry in the street. He came back with me while I lunched & then we set out for a walk together. Went round to leave a card on Nicholas & then up the Recolletos where I saw Carrie & told her to beg her mother to go to Mrs Hunts wh she said she wd do. We came home in a cab. Mr Hamilton came to fetch some medicine & said Mrs Hamilton thought the child dying– Backgammon. We gave a dinner to the English Moores, Jamesons, Bells, Whites, Fitch, Williams & legation—16 in all– Genl Concha (Havana) called.
