11 January 1874 — Madrid
Sunday. 11th [January 1874]. I went to church in the morning without Henry. Got letter from Blanche & wrote to her. Maffei lunched with us & went with us to the quartett concert wh was very full & we were very much crushed & cramped. Guelbenzu played a sonata solo wh bored us very much. From the concert we went call on the Sickles & Maffei went home. At the Sickles we met Lindstrand who came & spoke to us for the 1st time since he was so rude to me abt Hy not calling on him, but at the same time he was very snappish and tried to pick a fresh quarrel. Miss Bentley came to see me. Henry went to see Koudriaffsky & I came home. Albareda, the Bernars &c dined with us. But Albareda was in a dreadful state having just heard the Pastor who attempted to murder Amadeo & was condemned to death had escaped from prison. He could hardly eat or speak & went off before dinner was over– The rest stayed late.
