13 January 1874 — Madrid
Tuesday. 13th [January 1874]. Breakfast in bed. Charlie Hamilton finished all his copying today. Mrs Whyte came to sign the papers accompanied by her girl Alice. She & her sister returned from England on Sunday. I had a lesson of Inzenga. After lunch I dropt Henry at Quesadas for the music he always has Tuesday afternoons & then went to Emilias & got her to go out with me. We went to call on Marquilla Saavedra & then took a turn in the Fuente where we met Maffei & Haggard. I went to Mrs Whytes to return her muff she had left at our house this month & had some tea with them. After dinner while we were playing backgammon in walked the Baronesa le Antilla in deep mourning to ask us to ask Serrano to get her son made capt: I, furious, said I would see what I could do. I hate these errands.
