4 February 1874 — Madrid | |
Wednesday. 4th [February 1874]. Mr Jameson came again about the prospectus & Miss Bentley came to say she had heard of a place & wanted a recommendation. Copied letter for Henry. Wrote to Lady Ely, Col Fitch came in the morning & I began to paint in oils for the first time & Esquivel gave me a long lesson. We took a drive & walk in the Fuente & had the new poney we have bought. Gato de Lema came to say he wanted to take back some of the valuables he had sent here last year for safety. We dined early & went to join the Canitz at the Theatre Espanol to see the Manzanas de Oro, an extravaganza got up with great effect but was dull & too long. Maffei was there & visited us. We left at 12 & it was not then yet over– | |
