9 February 1874 — Madrid
Monday. 9th February [1874]. Painted all the morning. We went out driving but it was raining a little & we did not stay out long. Miss Bentley who starts tonight came to take leave of me, before she was gone the Dss de la Torre, Emilia Riaño & Mme Saavedra came to call so I had to bustle her off. They had been to the Archaeological Museum together & then came to see me. As they were leaving Maffei called. I was called up to Hill who was not well. I made her go to bed & Mrs B dressed me. We had news of Monty’s being beaten at Wareham. A few people came in the eveng and the Sickles who stayed till nearly 1 o’cl.
