15 February 1874 — Madrid
Sunday. 15th [February 1874]. Not being well I stayed in bed & on the sofa all day. It was dreadful weather for the Carnaval—& poured at intervals heavily. Henry went out riding to the Prado but cd not stay out long & said there were very few masks to be seen. I got up for dinner. Mr Gayangos, Maffei & the secs dined with us at 7, at 8½ I went to fetch Juanito Riaño & took him to the Presidencia to the masked ball. He was dressed in Louis 15th dress—black velvet with steel buttons. Henry with Maffei, Saurin & O’Connor came later. The ball was given in the reception rooms—being the first time they were opened. There were a great many children & all nicely dressed. Henry went to Montijo’s & came back to fetch me home & we went home abt 12 taking Juanito home first. No post in today.
